Franchise Buyer's Guide & Workbook

FranchiseBuyersGuideWorkbookThe Franchise Buyer's Guide & Workbook

In 2002 I wrote The Franchise Buyer’s Guide & Workbook, a 300-page guide to finding and buying the right franchise.

The workbook included FranScore™, an easy to follow checklist anyone could use to grade a franchise before spending a lot of time or money chasing a franchise opportunity that wasn't a good fit.

So much has changed since 2002, including a complete revision to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Rule, and updated North American Securities Administrators Association, (NASAA) requirements I don't sell it anymore, but I am kicking around the idea of writing an updated version. If I decide to do that I will announce it on this website.

In the meantime, you can read some articles about franchise development, including selling franchises on the Franchise Articles page.

I will be posting there periodically so continue to check back.

A few testimonials:

Since 1990 our firm has been providing consulting services and buyer guides to people interested in buying existing businesses. We have always found there to be a terrible void of viable, unbiased resources that could truly help those interested in buying a new franchise. All of that has changed since Michael Childs has put together the Franchise Buyer's Guide & Workbook. This program is incredible! We absolutely recommend this as a "must have" tool for anybody looking to buy a franchise. Next to buying the right franchise, the Franchise Buyer's Guide & Workbook will be the best investment you'll make.

Although franchise law may be different on this side of the Atlantic, I have found the Franchise Buyers Guide and Workbook to be a very clear and thorough introduction to the business world of franchising.

It will certainly help in getting it 'right the first time'. My thanks to Michael.

Dear Mike,

Thanks for the quick response. Like I said, your workbook program is the most straightforward no nonsense guide to buying the right franchise that I've read. It seems like all the other books are either written by a franchise salesman or someone that just wants to vent about a bad experience with their franchise. What good is that?

I'm still negotiating with the franchisor using your information. I'll let you know how it turns out.

The Franchise Buyer's Workbook has given me the tools to select the right franchise investment for myself, utilizing an objective grading system (FranScore) and a detailed diligence approach. It has helped me control the information gathering and the interview process.

Anyone looking into franchising should purchase your book! It is an incredible value!

The Franchise Buyers Workbook is an indispensable tool for anyone purchasing their first (or their fiftieth) business. There is simply no better authoritative source available. The Workbook is well written, well indexed, and written in plain English. You don't need to be a lawyer to understand and use this book - but I rely on it in my law practice almost daily. If you buy only one book to educate yourself about buying a franchise, it should be this one. It is a resource worth many times the purchase price.

Dear Mr. Childs,

I am using your workbook program here in Sydney and you were right, it is very similar to the US franchising. Actually, the franchise I am considering is a US franchise that is licensed here. I'm learning a lot. Thanks.
